How are the logs fastened and sealed?
The logs can be fastened in several ways; lag bolts, engineered fasterned and thru-bolts. Most milled logs are fastened by the engineered fasteners, such as “LogHog” by FastenMaster. They recommend their fasteners to be spaced every 16″. LogHogs install faster and easier than lags and spikes, requires no predrilling, corrosion resistance and engineered for increased strength and performance. Foam tape, such as Emseal is placed in the center of the milled log and a quarter inch bead of caulk is applied to the beveled front edge of the tongue. This provides two seals against air infiltration; plus the caulk provides a water barrier. 3.
