How are the KM1 and KL2 Career Development Awards different from the NIHs K08 or K23 awards?
They are similar in intent and the funding that is available. However, there are several important differences. The KL2 and KM1 application materials are much shorter, and the time to notification is much shorter. For the KL2 Program, a group of scholars will be chosen each year, resulting in a cohort that will provide camaraderie and numerous opportunities to develop collaborative relationships early in training. Both the KL2 and the KM1 programs emphasize intensive mentorship, requiring each scholar to have two mentors. Finally, awards will be determined by a multidisciplinary committee comprised of KL2 and KM1 faculty and affiliated investigators.
