How are the items in the Library selected?
Because the materials discovered through NSDL are contributed by a broad range of content providers, the selection of collections and individual resource items occurs in a number of ways. In some cases, collections are submitted directly to the NSDL Editor-in-Chief for review. Subsequent determination about inclusion is based on criteria for quality, accuracy, appropriateness, and reliability. Other NSDL resources are actually items within partner libraries, and have been selected based on the processes of each specific contributor. Common selection mechanisms include peer review boards, content creation committees, and user recommendations. Still other resources have been developed as the result of National Science Foundation or other federal agency grants whose competitive selection processes include expert review panels.
