You can control the intensity of the flames by simply adjusting the control knob located on the front of the fuel chamber. If the knob is fully extended to the right hand position, you will have the maximum amount of airflow going through the chamber, creating the highest flame. Adjusting the knob back towards the OFF position will lessen the amount of airflow into the chamber, reducing the flame height.
