A. Wooden blocks are used for printing the designs. Skilled craftsmen carve motifs on wooden blocks in mirror-image. This wooden block is then dipped in colour dye before applying the motif in a manner similar to a rubber stamp. Skilled craftsmen press the block firmly but swiftly in a wave like motion to create a continuous flow of motifs on a securely fastened length of fabric. If the pattern contains several colours this process is repeated for every colour. Block printing by hand is a slow process capable of yielding highly artistic results clearly visible in each piece of napkin, placemats and table runners. Though a great degree of precision is followed while printing with blocks, some irregularities in the colour or design are inevitable and are a proof of authentic handwork. Q.
