How are the degrees of seriousness of hair loss to be determined?
There are ten degrees of seriousness for seborrheic hair loss and postpartum alopecia. A 10% loss of the original amount of hair is counted as 1 degree. By analogy, the total loss of hair means the 10th degree in seriousness. The 1st, 2nd, 3rd degrees mean that the illness is still considered light; the 4th, 5th and 6th degrees mean medium seriousness; and the 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th degrees mean that the illness is severe. For alopecia areata there are 3 degrees. The light degree implies a short case history and that the scope of baldness is not in excess of 5 patches, with the largest patch not exceeding 3cm3cm in area; the medium degree implies a relatively longer case history and that the scope of baldness is not in excess of 10 patches, with the largest patch not exceeding 5cm5cm in area; and the severe degree implies a still longer case history and that baldness is in excess of 2/3 of the total area, with eyelashes and hair of other parts of the body being lost to various degrees.
