How are Surge Arresters and TVSS devices different?

0

Surge Arresters and TVSS devices are addressed differently by both the NEC and UL. Within the NEC, Surge Arrester requirements are explained in Article 280 and TVSS devices are described in Article 285. UL uses two different test standards to evaluate Surge Arresters and TVSS devices. TVSS devices are evaluated to the UL1449 2nd Edition standard and Surge Arresters are evaluated to the IEEE C62.34 standard. However, as defined in laymans terms, a Surge Arrester is used to protect from flash-over and a TVSS device is used to protect actual connected equipment.
