How are study participants selected?
Study volunteers must be gay men, transsexual women and other men who have sex with men; at or above the age of consent according local regulations; HIV-negative; healthy; sexually active; and at high risk for HIV. Volunteers are extensively interviewed to ensure that they understand the study and are participating voluntarily. They receive complete information about HIV infection risk behaviors, the study drug, the purpose of the study, and what is required of them. Volunteers are recruited through outreach to the gay men, transsexual women and other men who have sex with men communities. Information about the study is being made available at community events, over the Internet, and through recruiters who visit places where people meet. All outreach efforts emphasize that participation is voluntary.
