How are students assessed and classified within the Bilingual/ESL programs?
Students who have a language other than English on their home language survey must be tested to determine whether or not they are LEP. Grades PK-12 students must take an oral language proficiency test in their home language and in English. Students must be tested immediately after their initial enrollment into the district. 1. PK-1(six years 11 months) PreLAS 2000 2. 1-6 students LAS I 3. 7-12 students LAS II Students who score 1, 2, 3 on the oral proficiency test are classified as LEP. The LPAC must review all pertinent data and place them, subject to parent approval, in the appropriate bilingual/ESL program. Grades 2-12 students must also take the LAS reading and writing tests. Students who have an LPI of 1/2, 2/2, 2/3, 3/3 are LEP. Students may also take a standardized test from the state approved list.
