How are spam and junk e-mail managed?
Globally, over 80 percent of Internet e-mail is spam. Rather than have users waste time deleting unwanted messages and wasting our mail system resources processing and storing spam, we deployed a spam filtering system. This spam system is separate from the GroupWise “junk mail” folder, which is a technique GroupWise itself uses to manage spam and which individual users can choose to use or not. The “junk mail” folder is explained later. The anti-spam system we use, called “GWAVA” uses several methods to block messages before they reach our GroupWise mail system. First, GWAVA blocks messages containing attachments with viruses. Second, GWAVA looks at the message header to block messages from senders listed on “RBL” services. RBL services list known spam senders. Third, GWAVA looks at the message body to block messages indicating domains listed on “SURBL” services. SURBL services list domains found in spam advertisements.
