How are Southern Baptists responding to the Dec. 26 tsunami?
Southern Baptists are doing tsunami relief in India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Thailand. Aceh, Indonesia — Relief funds have provided a public kitchen, hygiene kits, food, water and medical supplies. Plans include helping fishermen, tour guides and farmers reestablish their livelihood, while continuing to provide housing and water. Thailand — Missionaries and Thai Christians are assessing needs, hosting volunteers and following up when people respond to the gospel. South Asia, including Sri Lanka and India — Relief gifts initially provided school uniforms, water, food, shelter and Bibles. Southern Baptists plan to help with health screenings and medical clinics, offer counseling and train teachers. They’ll also distribute food, clean up debris, build shelters and reclaim wells.
