How are school district boundaries set? Can they be changed?
The school district’s boundaries were established in 1965 during the state’s latest round of consolidation. Much of the district at that time was rural. Since then, the city boundaries of Olathe, Overland Park and Lenexa have expanded, so that the district boundaries now encompass parts of each of those three cities, plus a very small area in Shawnee. School district boundary changes are rare, and are governed by state law. To effect a school district boundary change, both Boards of Education must agree to the change, which must then be approved by the Kansas Board of Education.
