How are roommates assigned?
Mutual requests for specific individuals are honored when possible. Otherwise, roommates are assigned on the basis of information supplied on the residence hall contract. Special consideration is given for a non-smoking roommate. No room assignments are made on the basis of race, color or national origin.
The Office of Residence Services will make every attempt to honor mutual requests for specific individuals when possible. However, since the information from the Preference Sheet is self-reported, we cannot guarantee that the assigned roommate will be compatible. Accuracy is extremely important. Incomplete or incorrect Social Security numbers for yourself or your preferred roommate(s) can affect your roommate selection, resulting in students who mutually requested each other being assigned to different units or halls.
All assignments are made according to the date of application, preferences, and space availability. Students who would like to room together should request each other as roommates and list their housing preferences in identical order. If the preference lists are not identical and/or the applications are submitted on different dates, University Housing honors the date of the first application received when making housing assignments. Part of the housing application includes a questionnaire in which your student will indicate some of their personal habits and preferences.
The Residential License Agreement, which all new residential students must return to the office of Residence Life, asks students to indicate their lifestyle choices, such as neatness, late study habits, and use of electronic equipment. The new student assignment team works to make roommate assignments as compatible as possible. A new student may also request to live with another new student, but this request must be done in writing, must come from both students, and must be received by the office of Residence Life by June 1.
