How Are Recordings Made?
On phonographic records, sound waves are etched into the grooves of the recording medium, whether a disc or a cylinder. The wiggles that re-create the sound are first cut into a wax master. In very old recordings, this wax master is played on the phonograph. However, in later recordings, this master is used to create plates to press vinyl copies for playback. Vinyl recordings are much more durable than wax.
