How are player names translated?
Go4Go.net maintains a central database for player information so that player names are used consistently through out the system. Player names are translated using the following rules: • All eastern names have family names first, followed by given names. • For players from mainland China — China has a well-established spelling system (PinYin) which maps Chinese characters to Roman letters based on pronunciation. This system is strictly followed by Go4Go.net. • For players from Taiwan — The author of Go4Go.net is not an expert in the official romanization system used in Taiwan. Luckily the system is said to adopt identical syllables as the mainland counterpart for about 80% of the times. Go4Go.net uses the mainland way to spell Taiwanese names and hopefully this does not cause any difficulties for the western readers. • For Japanese players — Although there are variations, romanization of Japanese is quite standard.
