How are PhD students funded when in Portugal?
When in Portugal, you will be supported by a fellowship from the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology. Once you accept the admissions offer you will be instructed on the steps you need to follow to process it. This is a very generous fellowship. The current (2007) monthly stipend in Portugal is €980, which at current exchange rates is approximately $ 1,500 per month. Given that Portugal is much less expensive that the U.S., this is a very reasonable stipend.
