How are pearls made?
Pearls are formed when a small bit of sand gets trapped inside an oyster. The oyster then produces a “nacre” as a defense mechanism. The nacre coats the sand over and over again until it becomes a pearl. Pearls are only found naturally in .01% of oysters. Cultured pearls are made with human intervention by placing a grain of sand (or something like it) into an opened oyster.
