How are patent rights treated in my sponsored research?
A. UM retains ownership of the patent rights resulting from sponsored research. Sponsored research projects are handled by OVPR’s (Office of the Vice-President for Research) Division of Research Development and Administration (DRDA) (www.research.umich.edu/contacts/drda/drda_contact.html). Often, sponsored research contracts provide the sponsor an option of limited time to negotiate a license to any patent rights developed as the result of the research.
