How are participants selected?
Four DRC members independently score each application, without knowing who the applicant is. Then, scores are compared, and if one score varies greatly from the others, the DRC members reconcile their assessments. Scores are averaged and ranked. Applicants with the highest scores are selected for the DEAL class, unless the ranking does not produce a diverse class. In that case, applicants with lower scores are selected to ensure balance and diversity by environmental media, job location, union representation, sex, race and previous applicants.
