How are open files handled ?

We support open files. On Window 2003/XP or later versions, we use the Volume Shadow Copy. On other systems we support 3rd party Open File Managers. However, as most backups are performed at night, this is rarely an issue since most files are normally closed anyway.

Open files in “shared” mode are backed up, but files opened in “exclusive” mode are skipped and noted in the log file. However, if the client uses an open file manager utility (OFM), all files can be backed up regardless of how they have been locked. Using the OFM, BlueBackUp can back up e-mail, databases, intranet applications, and all other open files – even if the files are changing during the backup.

However, we have an optional integrated open file manager utility (OFM) that can back up files even if opened in “exclusive” mode.
