How are onscreen program listings updated for televisions that get their broadcasts over the airwaves and don use cable?
Although most of the broadcast television signal is video, there are also some data streams that go along for the ride. This information is embedded in a part of the signal called the vertical blanking interval. Sending the information along that way is sometimes called datacasting. In addition to television listings for each channel’s daily schedule, other types of nonvideo information, like closed captioning, can be embedded.
