How are MRI scans performed?
Your MRI scan will be performed in an MRI unit or “magnet”. The MRI unit looks like a large box with an open tunnel running through the middle and closed sides. The unit opening easily allows light and fresh air in. “Open” MRI units look the same except the sides are open. You will be asked to lie on a comfortable, padded table that is then gently glided through the opening of the MRI unit where scanning is performed. A two-way intercom system and glass window allow you to communicate with the MRI technologist. Sometimes a coil, which is a special instrument that looks like a wand, will be placed around your body or the body parts being scanned, e.g. Knee, Shoulders etc. during the scan. A coil is used to improve the quality of a scan. The data, or information, gathered during your scan is then entered into a computer. The computer changes the data into very clear images that your physician can use to make a diagnosis.
