How are Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) scores used in this system?
MEAP scores are used to evaluate the student achievement component of Education YES! As mentioned above, the system does not evaluate schools based on a single test score on a single day. Education YES! uses three years of MEAP data to balance the effects of unusual events in a school. The system also looks at achievement in two ways – status and change. Achievement status will be the most familiar to Michigan’s citizens. This measures how well a school is doing in helping all of its students reach high levels of academic achievement. It is based on the MEAP scores of the students in the school. Change looks at differences in achievement levels over time. It is based on the improvement or decline over time in the MEAP scores of the students in the school. When growth is added to the system in future years, it will look at whether students are receiving at least one year of academic growth for each year of instruction.
