How are meetings run? What does a typical meeting look like?
A typical meeting starts with one facilitator welcoming the members, then a member (pre-selected) shares a brief story about themselves and why they are on the council (“Why I Am Here”). Then we typically work on 2-3 topics. A staff person or team will come and give a basic background, then ask specific questions of the council. Then their job is to listen while a discussion is facilitated. Sometimes the council breaks down into small groups to brainstorm on answers to the questions. Everyone reports back and their ideas are typed up for the staff who asked the questions. At the end, about 20-30 minutes is dedicated to reports — updates on previous topics, hospital news, etc.
