How are macular degenerations diagnosed?
The early signs of Macular Degeneration are usually detectable in a thorough eye exam even before the disease begins affecting vision. The doctor will examine the eye with special lenses, which help to show the interior of the eyeball through the pupil, the opening in the centre of the iris through which light rays enter the eye. Tests for Macular Degeneration include: • Acuity tests which measure the accuracy of your reading and perception vision at specific distances in specific lighting situations. This is the test that people are most familiar with and typically involves a standard eye chart. • Colour testing which can help to determine the status of your cone cells.
