How are local authorities supporting National Grid’s solar initiative?
The state of Massachusetts has been very supportive of emerging green technologies. In July of 2008, the Green Communities Act was passed, paving the way for accelerated development of renewable energy. The act drives the state to provide at least 20% of its electrical load for year 2020 through renewable energy resources. Local politicians are very dedicated to this initiative as well. Governor Deval Patrick established a goal of having 250 MW of solar power by 2017. Back in January of 2008, he established Commonwealth Solar, a program dedicated to accelerating the rise of the Massachusetts solar industry. Boston’s Mayor Menino aspires to have 25 MW of solar power in Boston by 2015. He also believes that green jobs are essential to the cities economic future.
