How are Learning Difficulties Identified?
Some common categories are: • Math disabilities formerly referred to as dyscalculia • Expressive language disabilities • Dyslexia • Attention difficulties • Spelling • Dysgraphia or difficulty with physical writing Often people with low tested intelligence find it easy to learn to read or do math, while others with high intelligence find reading almost impossible. In many ways, intelligent people with LD are harder to teach, because they are able to hide their problems from teachers and parents. At least 20% of children today have been diagnosed with some form of Learning Disability such as dyslexia. These kids will certainly have trouble learning to read in a standard classroom because information is blocked from reaching the brain because of impairments in the auditory, visual, motor, (or a combination) processes.
