How are lab notebooks graded?
For every lab and every class with a class activity (many of them) your instructor will record a grad of “S” if your notebook use is satisfactory, “U” if it is unsatisfactory, and “0” if there is nothing (you were not in lab or class that day). On occasion lab materials may indicate an extra-effort opportunity for which you may earn a grade of “E”. As indicated in the “Using your notebooks” section of the first lab, this grading is not based on technical correctness (except for the E grade) or even completion of all material, but rather appropriate use of the notebooks and satisfactory effort in lab and class activities. If your use of notebooks is marginal, you will be given at least one written warning in the grading of an earlier lab before your work will be considered unsatisfactory. The 0, U, S, and E grades are worth 0, 1, 2, and 3 points, respectively. The sum of these points will be used to obtain the participation part of your grade.
