The education system is different, Catholic maintained schools are taught slightly different to protestant and integrated schools.

There are less ‘electives’ in high School. In all the schools there is a much greater emphasis on discipline than in American schools. ‘SElf Esteem’ and similar ‘socail study’ concepts are pretty much ignored. Relgious Instruction – ie Catholic instruction – is mandatory in all the public schools as is instruction in the Irish Language. There is not much chance of getting to University in general – far fewer places and far higher requirements than the US. Teaching in Ireland is far more prestigious a postion that – ufortunately – the US.
