How are infections of the tonsils and adenoids treated?
It’s important to have all throat infections evaluated and treated by a physician since certain infections, such as strep infections, can be especially dangerous if untreated and may lead to serious medical complications, including heart and kidney damage. Bacterial infections in the tonsils and adenoids can be treated with antibiotics, while viral infections (which don’t respond to antibiotic treatment) are usually treated with over-the-counter drugs to relieve symptoms such as pain and fever. Dr. Shin can also drain abscesses in the office. When children have infections that are resistant to treatment or recur frequently, surgical removal of the tonsils and adenoids should be considered.
