The abiotic theory is not very well embraced in the oil industry today (or the academic community, for that matter [well, except for astronomers]) for many reasons – it cannot explain the more complex hydrocarbon chains that we see everyday (such as crude oil or bitumen). The abiotic theory can only explain the creation of methane and other such gases – not liquids or solids, which we see everyday in our line of business. It’s very hard to argue against the organic theory with all of the lines of evidence pointing to this as the source for our hydrocarbons. Abiotic theory is simple and fits nicely in some cases, but in 99% of the cases, it does not.
