How are heat pump efficiencies rated?
Heat pump efficiencies and central air conditioning are both rated by SEER or Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating. Similar to miles per gallon on an automobile the SEER rating indicates the approximate cost of operation of the unit. The minimum the department of energy allows manufactures to produce is a 10 SEER unit. The higher the SEER, the greater the efficiency and the greater your energy savings potential. In addition to the SEER, HSPF or Heating Seasonal Performance Factor also rates heat pumps. This measurement indicates the efficiency of the heat pump in the heating mode. The higher the HSPF specification the more efficient the unit. The minimum requirement by the department of energy is 6.8 HSPF.
