How are greyhound are pets?
Yes, they are very gentle dogs that make wonderful pets. Why greyhounds are often in shelters: Some of the greyhounds bred for racing don’t quite make the grade – ie, they’re not good enough at racing to have a realistic chance of winning. Others are retired as a result of injury. That injury can be very minor, but enough to slow them down so that they are a shade slower than others. Others retire because they get old. At around 4 years old they begin to slow down and can no longer compete with younger dogs. Cruelty cases? Sadly, not all greyhound trainers and owners care for their dogs as they should. Some are abandoned after retirement and that probably accounts for some of the cruelty cases you see. The muzzle is usually worn for one of two reasons: 1. They are often (not always) very keen to chase small animals. This can mean they are muzzled for the safety of local cats. 2. They often have a tendency to steal bits of food discarded on the pavement. I rarely bother with the muzzle
