How are general interest charge (GIC) remission requests handled by the external collection agencies?
As well as payment of the debt, collection agency staff can also discuss remission of general interest charge and have the necessary authorisation to remit amounts up to $10,000. GIC remission requests for greater amounts are referred back to the Tax Office for consideration. Agency staff follow the same guidelines as Tax Office staff in making remission decisions.
