The bile contains bile salts which are responsible for breaking down the cholesterol present in the bile. When there is an excessive amount of cholesterol present or if there are insufficient bile salts present to synthesize the cholesterol, then gallstones are formed. Sometimes gallstones may form when the gall bladder does not clear itself out as often as it should. Due to the decreased amount of contractions by the gall bladder there is an increase in the concentration of bile which can lead to the formation of gallstones.
