How are fever convulsions treated?
Fever convulsions normally don’t need any treatment at all. In most cases, the parents are reassured that there is nothing wrong with their child and that – mostly – these convulsions are harmless to the child. Nevertheless, to prevent future incidents, the parents are advised not to hesitate to start antipyretic treatment (against fever) even in case of moderate fever. Parents should be equally attentive when the child is at risk for developing fever, for instance, in case of vaccination. In severe cases, the child is prescribed medication for muscle relaxation, to be used in case of a future insult. This type of medication, which usually is given rectally in children, can be used also in the treatment of ‘status epilepticus’, an epileptic seizure that does not stop spontaneously.
