How are faculty course surveys (FCS) used as part of tenure, promotion and merit?

The results of any faculty course survey should be taken in appropriate context with the many different methods of evaluating teaching. In addition to the Faculty Course Survey, teaching should be evaluated by various measures which may include interpretation of results from peer evaluations and other elements of teaching dossiers or portfolios. Note: More information about teaching dossiers can be found here: http://www.ryerson.ca/lt/programs/workshops/res_doss.pdf It is clearly not appropriate to make tenure, promotion, and merit decisions based solely on FCS scores. Neither is it appropriate to set arbitrary numerical cut-offs for what constitutes satisfactory or unsatisfactory teaching. More about tenure, promotion and merit can be found in the RFA collective agreement and online http://www.ryerson.ca/teaching/forms/docs/07MeritGuidelines.
