How are donated organs matched to recipients?
When there is a donor, information such as blood type, age, height and weight are entered into the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) database. The system searches for the best-matched recipient for each available organ. Organs are matched with patients waiting for a transplant, both locally and nationally. Sex, race and financial status DO NOT influence the selection. Patients are selected on medical urgency and time on the waiting list.
