How are DNA samples collected?
Depending on the test there are two methods. Cheek Swabs – This is where cells are collected from inside the mouth using either a cotton tipped swab or a cytology brush. Blood Sample – samples of between 2 to 5mls are taken with the blood collected in special tubes to prevent clotting. There is a set of steps in taking these samples which includes verifying identification, careful labelling and record keeping Breeding decisions and maintaining genetic diversity! Genetic diversity means the gene pool is large enough to reduce the chance of poor combinations which could result in problems. Breeders should continue to keep the breed strong by maintaining diversity in the gene pool and by choosing matings for desirable traits, keeping disease status in mind as follows. DNA tested clear dog to clear dog = all offspring clear. Offspring can be declared DNA clear if parentage verification undertaken. DNA tested clear dog to carrier dog = acceptable as this will not produce any affected pups.
DNA samples are obtained easily from the inside of the mouth with a buccal swab. The swab sample will provide the DNA necessary to perform the test to the same level of guaranteed accuracy. Are Buccal swabs as accurate as blood samples? Yes. Buccal swab samples and blood samples contain the same DNA and will produce the same test result. Buccal swab testing is a painless procedure producing accurate results. The collector will rub the inside of your cheek to gather loose cheek cells with the Buccal swab. Can the test results be used in court? Yes. “Legal” (court admissible) paternity testing follows the rules and regulations to make those results admissible in all 50 states. Can testing be performed without the mother? We can perform a motherless test without any additional charge if the mother’s participation is not possible. More analysis is necessary, but produces the same accurate results.
