We use a spherical earth-model [as opposed to a flat-earth model 🙂 ] to find the Great Circle distance between the points your click on the map. In other words, we assume that the earth is a perfect sphere and measure distance along a curved line between any two points. You may have seen these curved lines on an airline’s route map.
