Distance between the planets are measured by laser pulse method. In this method, some laser pulses are beamed towards the other planet from a powerful transmitter with a certain velocity. The time between sending and receiving the laser pulses is determined very accurately. Now, the distance between the planets is calculated using the formula, d = ct/2 where c = velocity of laser pulses t = time between sending and receiving them.
