Degree day values are temperature summations. In simple terms, the number of degrees by which the daily mean temperature has gone above (or below) a threshold is calculated day by day and then totalled over the year. Days when the mean temperature is below (above) the threshold do not contribute to the total. The formulae used for calculating degree days above a threshold are as follows (equivalent formulae are used for degree days below a threshold).
