How are decisions made during the IEP Process?
Decisions are made by consensus. This means that every person on the team has the right to express an opinion on each issue that is discussed by the team. The designated administrator’s responsibility is to help the team develop a plan that the schools and parents find acceptable. Team decision-making requires a partnership where each side respects the position of the other and attempts to put together a plan that will benefit the student. Where disagreements on one or more issues cannot be resolved quickly, there may be a need to temporarily adjourn a meeting and give participants time to collect additional information and to create new approaches that may be acceptable to all parties. However, in those situations where agreement is not possible the designated administrator will make the final decision. The parent can then use mediation or a due process hearing to have their unresolved concerns addressed.
