How are cold sores treated with Valtrex?
Cold sores are also cause by a herpes virus (herpes labialis). Valtrex is the only 1-day oral antiviral approved for treating cold sores. Treatment must be started at the earliest sign of a cold sore such as itching, tingling, or burning. Two doses of Valtrex are taken 12 hours apart to help speed up the healing of cold sores. There is no data determining if Valtrex is effective if it is started after the cold sore develops into a papule, vesicle, or ulcer.
