How are Chantix and certain over the counter smoking cessation drugs covered?
In accordance with Rhode Island law, both the Chantix Starter Pack and Chantix Continuation Pack are covered. They require Prior Authorization, enrollment in a smoking cessation education program, and are subject to a Tier 3 copayment. In addition, they are subject to a Dispensing Limit. Prior Authorization for Chantix will be for 6 month increments. A new Prior Authorization will be required after 6 months. Certain over-the-counter (OTC) smoking cessation medications are also eligible for reimbursement (such as gums, lozenges, nicotine patches) when used in conjunction with a smoking cessation education program.
