How are CD-Rs manufactured?
The glass master is used to make a stamper for the injection molding machine. It contains a wobbled pre-groove as defined in the Orange Book. A molded substrate is spun rapidly and then coated with a proprietary dye that each manufacturer has developed. On top of this dye a gold or silver reflective coat is added by means of vacuum deposition. Then by spinning the disk again a coat of lacquer protection is applied. Some manufacturers then add extra layer to prevent scratches and increase durability.
