How are caves/cliffs/archest/stacks made during coastal erosion?
With the landforms you listed, I’ll assume you want the connected definitions, so I won’t mention the other way cliffs can form. Caves are formed by erosion from wave action in the lower end of a rock face at sea level. Eventually, the roof of the cave will collapse forming a cliff, a sheer rock face. The rock that is below low tide won’t be eroded and forms a wave-cut platform. A cave can also form in an outcropping of rock with ocean on both sides. When the rock is eroded all the way through, an arch is formed. Just like the formation of a cliff above, the top of the arch will eventually collapse as well, leaving a stack. They all form as softer rock, or rock that’s more exposed to the waves are eroded before harder, or less exposed rock.
