How are caverns developed?

Water is pumped down an inner pipe into a narrow hole drilled in the salt formation and is drawn out through a larger outer pipe which has a bottom above the bottom of the inner pipe. The salt located between these two pipes will dissolve and will eventually form a cavern. This process is referred to as brining.
