How are calls connected?
We have nationwide coverage, i.e. we can provide our service to customers anywhere in Australia. Most calls are still made using Telstra to pick up the call at the local exchange. Telstra then delivers the call to the appropriate carrier’s switch. The carrier used is determined by the override code on the front of the phone number dialled. If no override code has been used by the caller, Telstra then inserts the override code of the “preselected” carrier. All calls are sent around the national network with these carrier codes on the front. Telstra also adds an extra number if the code was inserted through preselection. Hence we know which calls were made using an override code and which through preselection. Having determined the carrier through which the call is to be placed, Telstra then delivers the call to the appropriate carrier’s switch.
