There are various ways in which lab conservators clean artifacts. Mechanical cleaning involves the use of dental picks, probes and scalpels. Chemicals, such as acid, are sometimes used as well. Most often, however, artifacts are cleaned with filtered water from which chlorine, fluoride, iron or other impurities have been removed.
